Carrying all the things ≠ carrying the wrong things
Hey friends,
Do you ever check the news, slam your laptop shut, and mutter, “Nope. Can’t carry all this today”? Same.
I finally made a rule: no news before 9am and none after 6pm. I need those bookends in my day to actually function as a mom, wife, and human who already carries enough—groceries, backpacks, deadlines, emotional baggage, and sometimes my 9-year-old’s endless play-by-play of her runny nose at 2am. (I'm sleep deprived today because Adina woke me up every 20 minutes last night to announce that she blew her nose. Endearing? Sure. But also…please go back to sleep, kiddo.)
This week was Yom Kippur—the Jewish holiday of reflection and atonement. For me, it always feels more like the real new year than January 1. January is when I set the practical, business-y goals. Yom Kippur? That’s when I reset the emotional, spiritual, and “how do I be a better human” goals. And it always leaves me feeling renewed, lighter… until I open the news again.
Here’s the thing: I know my boundaries, and I protect them. That’s how I keep myself able to carry the things that matter. And honestly, our movement routines deserve the same boundaries.
So let me ask:
-Do you force yourself through a fitness class you hate because you think you “should”?
-Do you stick to a workout that feels like torture because it’s convenient?
Dude! (As I said to Adina at 2am) Why? That’s like carrying three grocery bags in one hand while your pinky finger goes numb—just because “that’s how you’ve always done it.” Torture. Stop it. You have options.
When we train smarter—using breath and strength work to actually support the load—we can carry all the things life throws at us. And when we set boundaries around what doesn’t serve us, we stop breaking our backs (literally and figuratively).
So here’s your reminder for the week: check your boundaries, check how you’re loading your body, and if you’re tired of carrying all the things the hard way—let’s talk. I’ll help you find a way that feels better. My 20 min, 1:1 consultations are free. Just email me: [email protected].
Big love (and fewer nose-blowing wake-ups, please),
Coach Joanie

Practicing what I preach: only carrying what matters (and today, that’s my bodyweight). Still working on those pull ups!
